The Stroud family did not plan to adopt when they began fostering with Wellroot Family Services in February 2021. Over the course of their time fostering, they opened their hearts and home to two teens, four infants and three school-aged kids, while also providing respite care for 10 additional children, all guided by their deep belief in family and in the parents they supported.

In December of 2024, after caring for several infants back-to-back, they received an urgent call about Avery, a newborn who was born prematurely and was experiencing the effects of prenatal substance exposure. Their Wellroot case worker believed they were the perfect family to provide a safe and loving home through the holidays.

At six weeks old Avery was fragile. The Stroud family welcomed him with open arms, and their children, Allie and Cooper, embraced him as a sibling from day one.

They prayed for Avery’s family to be restored and hoped his mother would be able to care for him. Avery’s biological mother worked hard to meet the requirements of her DFCS case plan, and the Strouds supported her efforts, facilitating visits and building relationships with her and Avery’s grandparents.

Wellroot case worker, Paige, attended every court hearing, explained legal jargon plus processes, and encouraged the Stroud’s to advocate for Avery’s best interests. Throughout this emotional journey, Wellroot was a constant source of support. Paige helped bridge communication between the Stroud family and Avery’s biological family, ensuring everyone was heard and felt respected.

After a difficult unsupervised visit, Avery’s mother made the heartbreaking decision to release her parental rights, telling Jennifer Stroud, “I know you guys love him so much because the way you love me.” It became clear that Avery’s best chance at a stable, loving future was with the Strouds.

Over 2.5 years in foster care, Avery grew into a vibrant, healthy child with a contagious personality. He became a light not only in the Strouds’ lives but also in the lives of other children placed in their care.

“Even at a young age, it was clear that Avery shared our values and ministry as a family,” expressed Jennifer Stroud. “To love and to be a light in the lives of others.”

On adoption day, the Stroud family celebrated with a sports theme, honoring Avery’s love for baseball. Today, their family is fuller, fulfilled, and forever changed by the gift of adoption.
